Active living fail

Not news: Active living is challenging when you have to drive to work every day.

My number one advice for an active and green lifestyle? Intentionally choose to live somewhere that you can either walk, bike, use public transit, or some combination of the three, to get to work and other necessary places (e.g., grocery stores, your kid’s school, etc.).   Easier said than done, especially when considering not only your job, but your partner’s, but a worthy goal.  If you’re not certain that you’re going to be in your current job for many years (and who is?), a lease is A LOT more flexible than a mortgage.  And despite what those tricksy real estate agents and lenders try to tell you, buying a house is NOT a good investment.

Green gift

Recycled

For our one-year anniversary, my parents gave us a set of green green glasses (yes, I meant to type the word “green” twice).  They’re made out of recycled green glass.  Lovely!

Also, I noticed that for some reason (i.e., blogger error) my Thanksgiving day post was not, in fact, posted on Thanksgiving day.  If you’re curious, it’s available now, and you can read it by clicking here.  If you like cute things, I would highly recommend it.

Happy Buy Nothing Day!

What are you going to do with all the time you’re not standing in line, fighting for parking spots, and stressing over whether or not you’ll get the last thingamajig that the store has in stock?

Here are some ideas:

  • Catch up with family or friends: call, email, or send an old-fashioned letter.
  • Brainstorm gift ideas that don’t perpetuate the cycle of “stuff.”  What can you give?  Time and talent: sewing, knitting, baking, organizing, giving really good back rubs, babysitting.  What gifts would support local artisans or businesses?
  • Grab a family member or friend and go for a walk or a bike ride.
  • Prepare a special meal.
  • Rediscover the board games that are buried in your closet.  Don’t have any board games?  What about a pack of cards?  No cards?  Try charades — you only need two things: some scrap paper and a pen or pencil for collecting ideas.

What are your ideas for Buy Nothing Day?

Green state dinner

The green news just keeps rolling out of the White House.  The state dinner hosted on Tuesday night included such touches as local greenery and a vegetarian menu (except for the prawns).  No doubt it helped that the guest of honor, India’s prime minister, was vegetarian.  Still, at least in this country, serving an all-vegetarian meal makes a pretty big statement!  If President Obama can serve a vegetarian meal at a very fancy and prestigious dinner party, you can, too.  You can get the full scoop in the NYTimes article here.

Now, if we can just get some green policies to come from the same location, I would really be excited.
